Department of Educational Studies

Department of Educational Studies is committed to ensuring the provision of high-quality education in teaching, research, and community engagement that focuses on the initial preparation of student-teachers and continuous professional teacher development. We draw on a rich theoretical understanding of education, mindful of its implications for teaching practise in the Ghanaian context. Through dynamic learner-centred courses that support lifelong study, our departmental members prepare student-teachers to meet the teaching demands of a culturally diverse 21st-century society. Therefore, the teaching philosophy of the department is based on the understanding that teaching and learning should be learner-centred rather than teacher-centred; the teacher acts only as a guide in the learning environment. This seeks to stimulate problem-oriented, critical, and interdisciplinary approaches to our activities. Student-teachers are provided with the opportunity to let their curiosity direct their learning; they do this by having access to hands-on activities. The department desires to continue educating individuals to function effectively at all levels of basic education. The Department of Educational Studies is made up of three (3) units (namely; Education Unit, Guidance and Counselling Unit, and Professional Development Unit), and a Resource Centre for Visually Impaired. The department offers a wide variety of courses and services to fit the educational and research needs of student-teachers. Among the courses taught by departmental members include:
