As Wesley College celebrates hundred years, it is a great opportunity to reminisce and celebrate our past and project it into the future. The department of languages was until recently made up of three units namely: English, French and Ghanaian Language.
Currently, the French unit has been carved out and it is now a fully-fledged department. We have a staff strength of nine (9) tutors, three of whom are Ghanaian Language tutors, with the remaining six teaching Communication Skills, English Language and other language related courses.
The department of languages remains the hub of communication since we train our students to communicate effectively in English Language and Akan. We have a long-standing history of making it possible for our students to pursue higher education through the use of English. All students irrespective of their area of specialization pass through our hands since they all study Communication Skills in the first year.
During the diploma era, students were taught both English and Ghanaian Language as well as literature to prepare them for the task ahead.
In the current dispensation, a new language course, Literacy, has been added to our list of courses. The literacy course is meant to equip all students with literacy skills so that they can impart these skills into the basic school learner.
We, in the department are aware that for the sustainable development goals to be achievable, all people need to be included. Language is the key to inclusion and the center of human activity, self-expression ad identity.
It is our hope that in the not too distant future, the languages department will expand and embrace other language related courses and better equip students of diverse language background with literacy skills.
