Department of French

French Department

The French language was acknowledged in Ghana long before independence; hence its introduction into our educational curriculum since 1948 at Achimota College. This long history of the language in Ghana culminated in Ghana becoming an affiliate member of francophone nations at the 2006 Bucharest Summit, though the status of an affiliate member is reserved for states and governments for whom French is a language used habitually and routinely and who share the values of the francophone world.
It is on the strength of this background and more others that the government of the time saw the need to establish a Teacher Training College with the sole responsibility of training Teachers of French language to handle the teaching and learning of French at the pre-tertiary level.
The then Mount Mary College was established and was tasked to see to the training of Teachers of French. As the years rolled by, the need to establish other colleges to cater for the middle and the northern belts of the country was felt, and that led to the creation of the French centres at Wesley and Bagabaga Colleges respectively.
The French department of Wesley College was however opened in the 2001/2002 academic year following a bilateral agreement the government of Ghana and the French government signed to expand the training of teachers of French in the country. Hitherto, Mount Mary College of Education was the only institution that trained French teachers for the first cycle schools. As a result of that bilateral agreement, two teachers were transferred from Mount Mary to begin the Programme at Wesley College. The teachers were Dr. Yegblemenawo (of blessed memory) who was to head the new department and was to be assisted by Mr.Shamsudeen Iddrisu.
The new department began with admission of sixty-three (63) students in October, 2001. The department has over the years churned out a lot of professionals who are teaching in various schools in the country, while others are occupying prestigious positions in the country and also in the diaspora.
Currently, the enrolment of the students stands as follows: First-year students are fifty-nine (59), second-year students are sixty-four (64) and third year students are seventy-four (74).
