Otumfuo Okays WESCO Centenary Celebration

The Overlord of Asanteman, Otumfuo Osei Tutu ll, has officially given the greenlight for the year-long centenary celebration of Wesley College of Education (WESCO), Kumasi, next year (2022).

The permission was granted, when a high-powered delegation of the 100th-year Anniversary Planning Committee, paid a courtesy call on him at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, yesterday.

The delegation, led by Bishop Christopher Andam, the immediate past Bishop of the Kumasi Diocese of the Methodist Church, Ghana, was at the seat of the Great Golden Stool to first, seek permission from Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to commemorate the anniversary, and second, to formally invite him to grace the occasion.

Series of activities have been lined up to mark the centenary anniversary.
WESCO was established by the Methodist missionaries at Aburi in the Eastern Region of Ghana in 1922 and moved it to its present location in Kumasi, in 1924.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II lauded the authorities of WESCO over the years, for churning out thousands if not millions of Ghanaians who in diverse ways, had contributed their quota in the promotion of education at all levels in the country.

The official launch of the centenary celebration would take place later this year.

The delegation to the Manhyia Palace included Mrs Charlotte Rockson, the Principal of WESCO, Mr
Kennedy Ameyaw Baah, the Vice Principal of the College of Education, Mr Joseph Eshun-Famiyeh, the Immediate Past Principal of the College and Mr. Joseph Yaw Adu, the Alumni Representative on the Planning Committee.
The others were Very Rev. Okontomene Mensah Bonsu, former Ashanti Regional Manager of the Methodist Education Unit and Very Rev. A. Amankwah, Former Staff Member of the College.

The rest were Mr Frank Owusu Ansah, Lecturer and Programmes Sub-committee Chairman, Miss Grace Donkor, Lecturer and member of the Planning Committee and Miss Cecijoe Asiedu Yirenkyi, the College Secretary.
