WESCO’s Overall Best Graduating Student shares the principles, challenges and ambitions behind his outstanding achievement.

For Richard Domfeh, the journey to academic excellence at Wesley College of Education (WESCO), Kumasi, was shaped by discipline, perseverance, faith and a commitment to continuous improvement. A graduand of the Bachelor of Education (JHS Education) programme from the Department of Mathematics and ICT, Richard emerged as the Overall Best Graduating Student, earning First Class Honours.
His achievement represents an important milestone in his academic journey and reflects the value of consistent effort, effective learning strategies and determination in the pursuit of excellence.
A Passion for Education
Richard’s decision to pursue teacher education was driven by his passion for educating and shaping young minds. He believes that teaching offers an opportunity to influence learners positively and contribute to their intellectual and personal development.
His choice of WESCO was informed by the College’s reputation for academic excellence and professional teacher preparation. During his time at the College, he remained committed to his academic goals, distinguishing himself through his performance and dedication to learning.
Among his notable achievements was being adjudged the Best Level 400 Student in the first semester. He subsequently graduated with First Class Honours and earned the distinction of Overall Best Graduating Student.
The Learning Strategy Behind His Success
One of the strategies Richard attributes to his academic success is the Feynman Learning Technique, a learning approach that involves explaining concepts in simple language to establish a deeper understanding of them.
His experience highlights the importance of moving beyond memorisation to develop a genuine understanding of academic concepts.
For Richard, excellence is not an isolated achievement but the product of habits developed and sustained over time. He believes that success requires discipline, consistency and a willingness to improve continuously.
This philosophy is captured in his personal motto:
“Excellence is a habit, not an act.”
Overcoming Financial Challenges
Despite his academic accomplishments, Richard’s journey was not without difficulties. One of the greatest challenges he encountered was balancing academic demands with financial constraints.
He explained that he navigated these challenges through discipline, effective time management, perseverance, prayer and a consistent commitment to his academic goals.
The experience strengthened his belief that challenges can be overcome through determination and faith. It also taught him the importance of remaining focused on long-term aspirations, even when circumstances become difficult.
Reflecting on the lessons he learned, Richard emphasised the importance of perseverance, discipline and faith in overcoming obstacles and achieving excellence.
Gratitude to Those Who Made a Difference
Richard acknowledges the important role played by his parents and lecturers in his academic journey. He particularly recognises Madam Insanatu Muntaka for her influence and support.
He expresses heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to his success through sacrifices, guidance, prayers and encouragement.
For him, the achievement is not merely a personal accomplishment; it also represents the support and investment of the people who believed in his potential.
Looking Ahead: Mathematics, ICT and Artificial Intelligence
Following graduation, Richard intends to pursue a master’s degree in Mathematics and ICT to strengthen his academic and professional expertise.
His future aspirations extend beyond personal advancement. He hopes to integrate Mathematics, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve teaching, strengthen digital literacy and enhance learners’ problem-solving abilities.
He also intends to leverage educational technology and AI to simplify complex concepts and improve learning outcomes.
His aspirations align with the growing need for teachers who can combine subject knowledge, sound pedagogy and responsible technology use to address the changing demands of education.
A Message to WESCO Students
Richard encourages students to remain disciplined, study consistently and identify learning strategies that work best for them. He also challenges them to pursue excellence beyond academic grades.
His advice reflects the principles that guided his own journey: a commitment to learning, perseverance in the face of difficulty and continuous personal improvement.

Richard Domfeh’s recognition as WESCO’s Overall Best Graduating Student is a celebration of his academic performance and the principles he says guided his journey.
